Tablao
Villa-Rosa and its artists
The tablao Villa-Rosa, established in 1911 where an old
chocolate mill once stood, is one of the capital’s Flamenco sanctuaries.
Inspired by Islamic architecture, the establishment has carved arches and
painted tiles, where world-famous cantaores (singers), guitarristas (guitar
players) and bailaores (dancers) have performed. Some of the most renowned have
been Fernanda de Utrera, Lola Flores, Imperio Argentina, Juanito Valderrama,
Juan Varea, Miguel de Molina, Antonio Mairena, Antonio Arenas, José Antonio
Díaz Fernández "Chaquetón" and Pepe Marchena.
Since its opening, the Villa-Rosa’s performances have been so
acclaimed that dignitaries such as Alfonso XIII of Spain, the bohemian
Hemingway or the American actress and singer, Ava Gardner have been guests at
the tablao. The Villa-Rosa has also appeared in Almodóvar’s melodrama “High
Heels”.
Nowadays, the Villa-Rosa still offers very high-quality shows
on a daily basis, with renowned artists such as Marco Flores, Irene la Sentío
and Inmaculada Aranda.
The performances, which are
always one-hour long, are highly-expressive, sensual and full of color. It is
truly a memorable experience!
